A FEW MINOR NIGGLES

Optimistic speedo - reads 4-6mph high, no lumbar adjustment for the driver's seat, no reach adjustment for the steering wheel (just rake). Engine lacks refinement under acceleration and vibrates below 1400rpm - tuning it helps..

IMPRESSIVE FIXED 4 WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM

This winter has provided many opportunities to test the Rav's traction on slippery surfaces and it hasn't disappointed once, confounding my expectations!

As stated earlier, it has fixed 4 wheel drive unlike the 2006 and later models. This I suspect, is a bonus, in that so-called intelligent systems don't actually kick-in until the electronics detects wheel spin, by which time it could be too late! Whereas with a simple full-time system, all 4 wheels are always driven so if the wheels spin, its most likley to be due to too much wellie!

In fact, it takes a determined effort to spin the wheels even on soft mud and driven sensibly, you won't detect any whether the surface be fresh snow, compacted snow, slush, patchy ice, or mud and regardless of the gradient.

The Bridgestone Dueller tyres many well be a contributing factor and my neighbour is blaming his Discovery TD5's Michelins for lack of grip.

RAV 4 TUNING - continued

We've been testing a TURBOTUNE 2B on the Rav and the performance is nothing short of superb. The throttle response is sharper, turbo lag reduced and it picks up speed effortlessly. No longer do you have to make a conscious effort to maintain any speed above about 55mph. Just the opposite - you have to watch your speed now, particularly when overtaking.

MPG is certainly better, with never less than about 38mpg and averaging over 43 on longer runs (32miles mixed roads). Mid 40s is probably possible on motorway journeys. These figures are almost comparable with a Rover 75 or Jaguar X-Type estate.....

MPG UPDATE 22-3-09. On a high speed 370mile round trip on A roads, & M6 in Cumbria, it returned 40mpg. This compares very favourably to our previous Rover 75 and X-Type, which would have managed about 45mpg driven in the same brisk manner. (for brisk read 'overtaking everything that moved'!)

The overtaking ability is transformed and in fact a Golf GTI (a diesel judging by the smoke!) was only just creeping ahead by 80mph as we accelerated down a slip road from a crawling pace. Its certainly an enjoyable drive - not what I expected from 2tonnes of 4x4 and not embarrassed by 90% of other 4x4s. (Bye bye Mr Jeep - he couldn't keep up!)

TURBOTUNE 2B DEVELOPMENT NOW COMPLETE

We've completed our RAV4 tuning and testing and have released the
final version of the Turbotune 2B, which is now available from our
dealers.

I have to say that I am extremely pleased with the way the Rav drives
(& I'm not easy to please when it comes to engine tuning!)

It is very, very responsive, has minimal turbo lag, pulls well from
1500rpm but will trundle along at just over 1000rpm in top gear and
yet returns 40mpg (49 on the computer) on a day to day basis (short
journeys) and 45 on longer ones (& I do use the extra performance ). High 40s is doubtless very possible driven in a more restrained manner. This
compares favourably with a Synergy 2 equipped Freelander Td4 2L and
puts the Landrover Discovery 2.5L TD5 to shame (28mpg is typical I'm
told and hard to improve on, although its not a fair comparison:
Shoguns and Navarras are about the same )

I particularly like its new found willingness and free revving feel -
its definitely a sporty Rav even if it is a diesel. There's no way you'd
believe it originally had just 115bhp!

I suspect the 2.2L 177bhp model would be embarrassed by it, although
the shorter gearing does contribute to the acceleration at the expense
of top speed (who cares about this? I don't?)

Incidentally the handling is fantastic for this type of vehicle (on
dry roads) thanks to the fixed 4 wheel drive on this '55 reg model
(pre 2006 facelift). Its easy to have at least two  tyres howling in
protest but it is totally predictable and holds the chosen line well.
If you do 'bottle out' and stupidly dab the brakes mid bend the back
will slide but the ESP takes over, bleeping indignantly at you, and
saves your bacon. (how do I know this...!)

Needless to say there have been no problems of any sort, and with this
final version, no warning lights or cutting out. I do however use
Millers Oils and swear by their Diesel Sport fuel additive, as well as
using ZX1 in the engine, power steering, gearbox, and transfer box
(didn't get round to putting it in the rear diff) as well as the fuel
once every couple of months.

Fitting is very straightforward since it is 100% plug-in with
absolutely no wiring mods or battery connections needed.

As you can see from the photos, there are 2 on/off switches, one for
the tuning section and one for the boost pressure alteration, with a
3rd rotary switch allowing selection of the actual degree of
performance boost. (Some drivers may want it biased towards economy
rather than maximum performance).

The boost pressure is only increased by 2-3 psi on full throttle  - enough to give a worthwhile boost in torque but also keeps the exhaust clean. On part throttle the increase is upto 4psi but as the pressure is much lower than on full throtttle, the actual pressure remains well below the normal maximum. (Most remaps increase the boost pressure so we are not doing anything these don't do, not that you can get one for most Japanese vehicles.)
