THINKING ABOUT CHANGING YOUR MOTORHOME DUE TO LACK OF PERFORMANCE?
THERE REALLY IS NO NEED TO - JUST PLUG-IN A TURBOTUNE
INTRODUCTION:
As a motorhome enthusiast for over 16years, I have owned & driven several models,
ranging from a 2.5D Elddis Autocirrus coach built, Peugeot Boxer II 2.2HDi High
Top, Citroen Relay 1.9d (Eurocruiser), to a VW Transporter 2.4D (Swift Carrera).
Currently I have a Vw T4 2.4D Compass Calypso, sadly the 5cylinder 85bhp engine it
predates electronic engine mangement so I can't tune it. It could do with another
20bhp as well!
Of them all, the 2.2HDI high top was the most impressive to drive, followed closely by the Autocirrus, though that was after I had visited TB Turbo of Lancaster (sadly, no longer trading) to have an intercooler and turbo fitted at a cost of £1600. The Relay 1.9 was horrible until I fitted a turbo and intercooler from a donor Xantia. That 25% extra torque totally transformed the noisy, tediously slow Eurocruiser into a quieter, more effortless and more economical camper.
A joy to drive had it not been for the lack of power steering!
You wouldn't believe the difference and you can experience a similar result on your turbo diesel by plugging in a Turbotune module.
From around 2000, diesel vehicle manufacturers started to use a new fuel injection system called 'common rail', where a simple, but very high pressure pump provides fuel to an accumulator rail (the common rail) that supplies the injectors. One advantage from a tuning standpoint is that the common rail system permits the fitting of a plug-in electronic module which will increase the amount of fuel injected in proportion to the accelerator position and hence driver's demand.
You can often identify whether your motorhome has such an injection system by the model designation. If the suffix hdi, cdti, dci, cdi, tdci, crdi, is present this usually confirms that a common rail system is present, making the use of a module possible.
"It has transformed our motorhome. We tow a car on a trailer now we have power to spare."
We supply a specially tuned version of the Turbotune, with the emphasis on more appropriate levels of performance & economy enhancement rather than top speed or 0 to 60 time. Designed to give more low down and midrange torque, the result is a safe but very worthwhile reserve of torque for overtaking and hill climbing without fuel consumption penalty. Clearly if you used the extra performance simply to travel at a higher speed you would expect to use more fuel. But driven in your normal style, the fuel consumption will often be improved.
"Brilliant, no turbo lag, Power/torque increase makes for mpg up 4-5mpg and easier towing of 1350kg caravan"
You will be surprised at how a modest and safe increase can enhance your motorhome driving experience, making long journeys much less daunting, not to mention, less tiring.
Finally, another point to consider is -:
You've no doubt noticed how much it costs when buying a new motorhome if you choose the more powerful engine option. Well now you can have similar performance for a fraction of the cost of that option.
"our 2.3 Ducato motorhome was doing about 28mpg, but with the Turbotune fitted it does about 34mpg"
Insurance: You should inform your insurers that you are fitting the Turbotune, and the good news is that most motorhome insurers will not charge you any additional premium. We recommend Safeguard.
